A recent study suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying these drugs should be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
