A defence official has stated that the MoD is currently examining the potential threats associated with Chinese vehicles, while personnel have been instructed to refrain from talking about classified matters in all vehicles.
Safety Guidance for Defence Personnel
In a recent appearance on LBC, a defence minister commented on claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss secret information while riding in China-made vehicles.
The minister said that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, however noted that security is a issue in every modern cars.
We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any vehicle, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those secret talks in secure locations. This is a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Security Context
This revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and bring chaos to public transit.
Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.
This broader security environment highlights the importance of strong protocols and caution in all aspects of government operations, from transport usage to discussions habits.
