European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
