Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Haywire Lazio

The feeling at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had conceded a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or was there ever a binding element keeping it intact in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, before he publicly stated that the management had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were facing for accounting issues. Reports that he could resign were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic on the pitch as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining initial five matches, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to tell if progress is being made or imploding.

Cancellieri's Surprising Presence

At least one man remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this season. He spent the last one on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, his parent club were advocating for him to remain there a while longer. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to reduce their roster without replacements.

He signed initially when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league with the club in 2022-23, almost all of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Finding His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was still trying to identify the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
