A minimum of 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.

The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
